Federal Tuition Assistance is a program that pays up to a certain amount of tuition and authorized fees per semester hour. That amount is determined by the service branches. Please contact your Education Officer to find out about tuition assistance programs through your unit.

Tuition Assistance payments are received and applied to student billing accounts by Student Business Services.

If you are participating in the Federal Tuition Assistance Program and plan to use (or are currently using) other VA education benefits, please contact us to ensure you are maximizing your benefits.

If you are eligible for VA education benefits and need help in a subject, you can get supplemental payments for tutorial assistance. The subject must be necessary for the completion of your approved degree program. You must be enrolled at one-half time or more. Even if you are passing a course, you can get tutorial assistance if your grade will be credited toward completion of your program.

VA will pay up to $100 per month for your tutorial assistance. The tutorial assistance you get will be in addition to your regular monthly education benefits for going to school. The limit for tutorial assistance is $1,200 (12 times the maximum monthly rate of $100).

If you are training under Chapter 30 or Chapter 1606, VA will not charge entitlement for your first $600 of tutorial assistance. For tutorial assistance over $600, VA will charge one month of entitlement whenever you receive an amount equal to the full-time monthly rate you get for going to school. If you are training under Chapter 33 or 35, VA will not charge you any entitlement for tutorial assistance.

Military Personnel & Dependents Non-Resident Tuition Exemption

Current members of the Armed Forces, veterans, their spouses and children who meet certain eligibility requirements may receive the Military Personnel and Dependents Non-Resident Tuition Exemption. This Exemption exempts all non-resident tuition and is processed by Student Business Services. Additional information on this Exemption and the associated eligibility requirements can be found on the Student Business Services website.

Yellow Ribbon Program

The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 GI Bill®. This program allows institutions of higher learning to voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the in-state tuition and fee rates. The institution can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution. Texas A&M University participates in the Yellow Ribbon program. It is awarded on a first-come first-served basis. Active duty service members and spouses of active duty service members are not eligible for this program.

Texas Residency for Active Duty Service Members, Spouses, and Children

Active duty service members, and their spouses and children, may be able to be deemed a Texas Resident by the Office of the Registrar. Please visit the Establishing Residency for Tuition Purposes webpage for more information.

The Military Transcript Credit Appeal should be completed by the student veteran based on recommendations of the departmental academic advisor and then forwarded for review to the Office of Admissions. For more detailed information please view the form or contact your academic advisor.
