Maritime Academy
Training and Commercial Cruises
The Maritime Academy requires students attend 3 cruises (2 training cruises and one commercial cruise). The training cruises have higher costs since they are facilitated by the Maritime Academies. Please note that all TAMUG students participating in a summer cruise pay the same amount they would pay if going on TAMUG’s General Rudder with the exception of travel expense to and from any point of departure and return from outsourced services of Cal-Maritime, Great Lakes, Maine Maritime or SUNY Maritime.Expected Out of Pocket Costs
VA Benefits will not cover cost of meals aboard these ships. Other out of pocket costs are travel expenses to and from any point of departure and return from outsourced services of Cal-Maritime, Great Lakes, Maine Maritime or SUNY Maritime. The commercial cruise has a fee associated with it that averages about $800 in addition to regular tuition and fees.Note: All tuition and fee charges as well as the cruise costs are subject to change from year to year. Due to the lower costs of the commercial cruise some students choose to not use their VA Benefits for that summer.
Full Time Status During Cruises – students’ cruises can be certified as full time if a memorandum from the department states the student will be working 40 hours a week toward practical training for the course.
*Please note, financial aid has different full time status requirements.
The Hazlewood Exemption current covers all required tuition and fees associated with the commercial and training cruises. Students must still cover travel expense to and from any point of departure and return from outsourced services of Cal-Maritime, Great Lakes, Maine Maritime or SUNY Maritime.
Fire School Training
VA Benefits can be used for this course if students submit a request for a Primary Institution Letter. The Marine Basic and Advanced course is a 1 week course at TEEX which is a non-college degree program and benefit usage is calculated by the cost of the course.
Note: Since the course is only 5 days several students choose to not use their VA Benefits. This training course is not eligible for financial aid.
